This year will mark The Queens Platinum Jubilee, 70 years that our Monarch will have reigned as Queen.

In the UK we will get an extra bank holiday which will be from Thursday 2nd June to Sunday 5th June. The normal spring bank holiday will be moved from the end of May to the start of June, to create a 4 day Jubilee bank holiday weekend. This will be the first time any British Monarch has celebrated a Platinum Jubilee so there are lots of celebrations planned and lots of towns and villages will be holding street parties and having lots of events to mark this special occasion.

The Queen succeeded to the Throne on 6th February 1952 on the death of her father King George VI. At the time of her fathers death she was in Kenya and became the first Sovereign in over 200 years to accede while abroad.

Elizabeth II (full name Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor ) was born on 21st April 1926 in Mayfair London the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth). Her father acceded to the throne in 1936 when his brother King Edward VIII abdicated.

Elizabeth was only 25 years old when she became Queen Elizabeth II. Her Coronation was on 2nd June 1953 which was held at Westminster Abbey London.

2022 will mark 70 years on the throne and the Queen becomes the third longest reigning monarch in history. This will be the Queens Platinum Jubilee having celebrated her Silver (25 years), Golden (50 years) and Diamond (60 years) Jubilees in previous years.
