About Motor Marks
The story of Motor Marks begins with its founder, Martin, whose fascination with registration numbers started long before personalised number plates became widely known.
Growing up in the 1960s, Martin spent many weekends train spotting – a popular pastime at the time. Alongside recording train numbers, he became intrigued by the unique registration numbers he spotted on passing vehicles. What began as a childhood hobby soon developed into a lifelong passion for memorable and valuable registrations.
After leaving school, Martin trained as a carpenter and joiner before establishing his own successful building business. It was while working in the construction industry that he made his first venture into the registration number market.
His first purchase was a Wolseley 1500 carrying the registration 9 MOV, bought for just £20. A week later, he sold the car for £100, making an £80 profit. That first sale sparked a passion that would eventually shape his future.
Soon afterwards, Martin bought a Morris Minor with the registration 27 UMM. With his own initials being MM, it became another memorable purchase and reinforced his growing interest in cherished registrations. While continuing to run his building business, he began buying and selling registration numbers, building relationships with dealers across the UK and developing an in-depth understanding of the market.
As demand increased, so did the business. Advertising in Exchange & Mart helped Martin reach customers nationwide, allowing him to grow his reputation while continuing to trade alongside his building work.
A major turning point came in 1985 when Martin invested in one of the first Motorola mobile phones – the famous “brick”. Although bulky by today’s standards, it allowed him to take customer enquiries and arrange sales while working on building sites, helping the business grow faster than ever before.
It wasn’t long before Martin made the decision to leave the building trade behind and focus entirely on registration numbers.
During the 1980s, he became one of the UK’s leading cherished number plate dealers, buying and selling registrations years before the DVLA entered the personalised registration market. Today, that same enthusiasm remains at the heart of Motor Marks.
