From 1 October 2014, the current paper tax disc will cease and instead of displaying on your windscreen DVLA will hold a digital record of every taxed and untaxed vehicle.
Any remaining months you may have left on your current paper tax disc after 1 October 2014 will mean you can either remove the tax disc from your vehicle or display it until it expires.
You will be able to check the tax status of any vehicle using the DVLA online website and the DVLA will still notify you when your vehicle tax is due for renewal. If you have an historic vehicle and it is exempt from tax you will still need to renew this.
If you purchase a used vehicle you will still be able to purchase the vehicle tax at a Post Office branch using the V5C/2 new keepers supplement and an Mot Certificate if applicable (if the vehicle is 3 years old or more) and also the fee or from October 1st 2014 you will be able to purchase the vehicle tax online or by phone.
If selling a vehicle however the vehicle tax will no longer be transferable. So if your tax disc was still current the new keeper will not benefit from this. The Vehicle tax will expire when a vehicle is sold and the new keeper will be required to tax the vehicle immediately before the vehicle can be used.
If you have been paying your tax annually or every 6 months, you will get a refund for any full calendar months left on the tax period when you tell DVLA you no longer require vehicle tax.
London proposes to ban Classic Cars?
According to recent reports Transport for London (TFL) may introduce an Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in London in the area that forms the Congestion Charge Zone. This proposal which the TFL are talking about to stakeholders and will consult with them and the general public later this year would be:
To ban older petrol and diesel powered vehicles that don’t or can’t meet the EU proscribed pollution limits. This proposed ban would affect many Classic Car owners and also local businesses such as Wedding Car Hire, Ice Cream Vendors, and Travelling Fun fairs ( who use old classic traditional vehicles and classic lorries). It would also affect the Routemaster buses and many of the popular vintage coaches as well as the second World War DUKW’s that provide the splendid tours of London and the Thames. The list is endless and we need to act now!
